Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia: Original Racism

The death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has simultaneously recalibrated talking points for the upcoming presidential election and intensified the importance of President Obama’s remaining months in the White House. Scalia reportedly died over the weekend while on a hunting trip in Texas. He occupied the highest bench for three decades since being nominated by President Ronald Reagan and unanimously confirmed in 1986. 

Like Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump, Justice Scalia is a Racist Suspect. 

Before his SCOTUS residency, Scalia commanded the United States Court Of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where, according to the New York Times, he issued opinions “skeptical of claims of employment discrimination.” In 2013, he helped erode the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which he branded a “perpetuation of racial entitlement.” And during the courts re-reconsideration of Affirmative Action, Scalia echoed predictable “Bell Curve” dogma about the intellectual ineptitude of negroes. The late justice explained that, “Most of the black scientists in this country don't come from schools like the University of Texas. They come from lesser schools.”

Scalia wasn't practicing White Supremacy. He was looking out for our best interest, so that aspiring black scholars don't strain our puny colored brains.    

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, a third generation physician and author of The Isis Papers, discussed Scalia’s assessment of black aptitude during one of her final lectures before her 2016 death. 

“150 years since emancipation, and [Justice Scalia] is justifying why black people should not be admitted to the law school because they don’t have what it takes. Maybe there’s a little nursery school law school that they can attend. That’s kind of more suited to what we’re going to allow them to do anyway.” 

The American Slave Coast, co-authored by Ned and Constance Sublette in 2015, explains how the United States was founded and thrived on a slave system that required the perpetual rape of black people. The organized sexual exploitation of black bodies informs the genesis of the United States Constitution that Scalia was charged with decoding. The Sublettes write: 

“The story of the Constitution’s making in 1787 has been told any number of ways, typically suffused with a cue-the-kettledrums aura of religiosity and an assumption of American triumphalism. Constitutional historians have tended to portray their subject as the most important political document in world history, in the greatest nation in history. In extreme cases this has involved elevating the framers to a sort of secular sainthood, as in the post-Reagan years, when a school of constitutional interpretation called 'originalism' emerged in American jurisprudence. Most prominently associated with archconservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, originalism is a fundamentalist movement that seeks in effect to construe the Constitution as static and unchanging by mind-reading the intentions of the presumably divinely inspired Framers - a word Scalia writes with a capital F, the way they did it in the eighteenth century. His opinions are shot through with variations on phrases like: 'The Framers recognized …,' 'The Framers contemplated …,' 'The Framers viewed…,' and 'The Framers’ experience …' This is a peculiarly subjective lens through which to view a document created by so many people, at such sharp cross-purposes with each other.

'Aware that the South would not join a Union that prohibited slavery,' writes Scalia’s generally dissenting colleague, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, who does not capitalize 'framers,' 'the framers in effect postponed the question of slavery’s continued existence by writing into the Constitution a series of compromises.' But if we were to follow the notion of original intent from the point of view of the South Carolina Framers, we would see the Constitution as protecting the right to own and trade [and rape black people.]”

Wishing For White Protesters Like Cliven Bundy

Dr. Baz Dreisinger was the first White guest on The Context of White Supremacy for 2015. She is the second Racist Suspect asked about the validity of Ta-Nehisi Coates assertion that, "White people are often sincerely and greatly pained by racism." [Incidentally, Gus asked Mr. Coates directly about this conclusion; he declined to comment.] Dr. Dreisinger declared that Coates speaks the truth; she and the White community are authentically anguished about the terrorism they have inflicted upon black people. She cited the recent infestation of Whites that have marched, held signs and die-ins for Michael Brown, Jr. and Eric Garner.

LMBAO was my initial response to Dr. Dreisinger's commentary as well as the photographic illustration of a sincerely and greatly pained White Man. But ROTF isn't a codified counter-racist response. A serious investigation of the latest swarm of White participation in black liberation reveals no altruism, no potency, no humor.

Where is the Well Meaning White Militia?
When Whites become earnestly committed to a cause, military might typically authenticates their sincerity. John Brown drenched the earth in blood to evidence his loyalty to ending black enslavement (so I been told). New millennium Whites claim his lineage - descendants with a birth right to complete his divine mission. But they're not strapped. "Anti-Racists" are not Cliven Bundy - armed, resolute Whites who contest unjust behavior and are willing to give or take a Racist life to produce Justice. Armed Whites publicly demonstrated their fury during the healthcare town hall meetings of 2009. Pale folks have continued packing in support of open-carry laws and in protest of possible firearm restrictions (symbolic White castration). One would think Whites who invest themselves in defending the 2nd Amendment would launch a siege on Ohio - an open-carry state; John Crawford, III and Tamir Rice were gunned down in Buckeye territory for holding toy guns. White gun enthusiasts didn't process these events as unconstitutional assaults on citizens' rights to arms. Apparently, it was just two niggers killed. No one who'll be missed. Black people are targeted for systemic, perpetual violence globally. Whites who allege to be against Racism are predictably lame, impotent and unable to adequately defend black life or rebuff White Terrorism.

"They Didn't Integrate It, They Infiltrated It."

Dear white protestors, this is NOT about you. 
Stop cannibalizing our movements with hashtags about every other life but ours. Stop plagiarizing Black people’s actual struggles for fictionalized white pain (I’m looking at you Hunger Games, with your whitewashed protagonist. “The Hanging Tree?” For real?). Stop scrambling to stand atop the growing pile of dead Black bodies to use it as your makeshift platform to secure more privileges and status for yourself. Stop using protests that should be about Black lives to exercise your white angst, break shit under the cover of darkness, and then bask in the bright light of white privilege while Black lives are declared to be worth less than the windows you broke.

An indispensable component of the System of White Supremacy is the concept of a White person that is not Racist. Victims of Racism are contaminated, Stockholm-Syndromed to yearn for White validation, White acceptance. It can be petrifying to think that every individual classified as White is a willing combatant in the army of White Terrorism. Invoking the name of John Brown or photos of Anne Braden or the presence of a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor in Ferguson is a tactic of White military science (White Supremacy PsyOps); "White allies" disarm black self preservation and accurate perception of Whites as enemies.

Frequently, these benign Whites have at least one commonality with Cliven Bundy, a focus on studying "the negro." Many Whites produced biographies, documentaries, dissertations and careers from their Civil Rights days of yore. Yet Racism remains. Minister Malcolm X and others have noted that White presence functions as a governor and surveyor of black efforts to counter-racism. The 1963 March on Washington, the film Selma or The Obama Presidency would not be possible or celebrated without direct White infiltration, domination. Whites are allies to White Supremacy, not black people; their attendance should always signal an attempt to control, corrode, and impede black liberation.

The C.O.W.S. was fortunate to feature a black activist from Toronto; she and her black comrades recognized the predictable ways that Whites practice Racism when they invade black counter-racism efforts. Consequently, they implemented a code to limit Whites' ability to remove focus from Whites practicing Racism against black people or divert attention away from black protesters to White participants. They didn't deviate from their code, and a sizable portion of Whites seethed, accused the black organizers of "reverse racism."

What Does It Mean To Be White?

This is one of Melissa Harris-Perry's first offerings of the year, and this Sunday broadcast was a revival for Viola Liuzzo, those two White boys killed with James Chaney, and James Reeb. Four Whites who've been dead a half century must be sanctified and acknowledged as sterling rebukes to any suggestion that all Whites are irredeemably Racist. Few question why the community of sincerely and greatly pained Whites has produced so few 'allies" willing to battle and die to end Racism or brand the puny crew of Benjamin Perry, Rev. Renita Lamkin, William Lloyd Garrison, and other "good" Whitefolks as statistically insignificant. At best, these are anomalies, White outliers that obfuscate the meaning of White Identity.

If anything, the dead bodies of Liuzzo, Reeb and James Chaney's White companions illustrate the "White" classification assumes unwavering devotion to White Supremacy and failure to comply can result in expulsion from the group and forfeiture of life.

Within days of Brown's shooting, Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal remarked:

The folks who were out last night, black and white. And when I kept saying the black community, you had a White couple to put up the black power sign up last night. That is an example of the community I represent. It was beautiful.

Following the the announcement that Eric Garner's killer would not be indicted, Spike Lee wanted to stress that a diverse New York collective assembled to object to the decision - which "has nothing to do with black and white." This is a predictable product of White Terrorism. White's have inflicted ceaseless, unpunished, White torture against black people; their mere presence makes many non-whites fearful, reluctant, or unable to communicate honestly about Racism - how Whites have and are tormenting us.

A White Man in a hoodie, brandishing an inadequately sized protest poster is a woeful expression of the power of White allies, rehabilitated race traitors who understand that the most they can do is the least they can do to end a Racist Empire that nourishes them.

This White lad's ability and will to vanquish Racism equal the likelihood of Cliven Bundy insisting that black  #NegroLivesMatter. No disrespect to the Garner family, but don't hold your breath waiting on Whites that are not Racist.

Ismaaiyl Brinsley: The Black John Brown?

(Author's note: Brinsley is alleged to have shot his black ex-girlfriend, Shaneka Thompson, before his reported shooting of two NYPD officers. If true, this is supremely incorrect behavior and should be unanimously condemned. Ironically, the first casualty of John Brown's botched insurrection was also a black person, Heyward Shepherd.)

Ismaaiyl Brinsley couldn’t be the black John Brown? So called anti-racists Whites like Timothy Wise proudly align themselves with the legacy of a 19^th century murderer; a White man who concluded the destruction of black enslavement would require White death. Brown hacked Whites to bits in Kansas and led an unsuccessful attack on Harpers Ferry in Virginia. He’s credited with sparking the Civil War and the end of the plantation phase of White Supremacy. Dick Gregory and legions of Whites and non-whites literally sing hymns of praise for this White killer.

But Ismaaiyl Brinsley? A black male who is alleged to have killed two of New York City’s finest in retaliation for the unjust deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, Jr. He’s immediately branded a “crazy” nigger.

Blacks kill Blacks because they have never been trained to kill Whites.

Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani justified police terrorism in predominantly black areas because of the scourge of black hooliganism. The red herring of “black on black crime” absolves Whites of their unrelenting Racist abuses and implies black defectiveness, which would require White Domination to maintain a semblance of order amongst dark people.

Contrary to en vogue hashtags, black lives do not matter. Whites recognized the twenty-year anniversary of the Rwanda massacre this year; they briefly acknowledged that President Clinton and the White collective were unconcerned with approximately a million black deaths. The reminiscing was a few months before the Ebola epidemic began throttling northwest Africa; Whites displayed the same Racist indifference until White lives were threatened.

Perpetual White Terrorism, black suffering with no foreseeable conclusion is the context of “black on black crime,” black crazy.

The [black] boy submitted until maddened at such injustice, and insane with pain, he sprang to his feet, and seizing an axe, literally chopped the [White] overseer in pieces. He made no attempt whatever at concealment, but hastening to his master, related the whole affair, and declared himself ready to expiate the wrong by the sacrifice of his life. – Twelve Years A Slave pg. 327

It is a colossal act of White Supremacy to classify black retaliation, black rage as insane. It is a testament to the effectiveness of White braintrashing that there are not more instances of what Ismaaiyl Brinsley is accused of doing.

Dr. Kamau Kambon remarked that Colin FERGUSON's self-hate button became deactivated on the Long Island Rail Road. Black people are in a perpetual state of rage and frustration. Whites groom us to direct our anger inward, toward ourselves and other black people (Shaneka Thompson). White Supremacy programming is engineered to ensure that we never train our attention and anger on those responsible for our wretched condition, White Women, White Men and White Children.

On December 25^th, 2012, Whites clamored to theaters to celebrate Quentin Tarantino’s cartoonish black rebellion (Django Unchained) – which was managed by an Oscar winning White man. Their sense of humor abated when Maurice Clemmons, Nkosi Thandiwe, Lovelle Mixon, Joan Little, and Mark Essex deviated from the script, correctly recognized Whites as enemies to black people and responded accordingly.

Many Whites are castigating President Obama, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio (Racist Suspect) and Rev. Al Sharpton for igniting a “Race War.” Racism (White Supremacy) Is War. White C.O.W.S. guests have acknowledged that they know Whites deserve to be slaughtered for what they’ve done to black and non-white people; they understand it’s logical – not crazy – for their barbaric system to produce Ismaaiyl Brinsley’s sooner or later.

Dr. Samuel Cartwright and other sacred Racists achieved distinction insisting that black freedom fighters like Minister Nat Turner and journalist Ida B. Wells were afflicted with Drapetomia (absconding from service to Whites).  Jonathan Metzl's The Protest Psychosis: How Schizophrenia Became a Black Disease documents how Whites began condemning black people as deranged for opposing Racism.

One does not have to endorse or glorify Brinsley’s purported acts. But we’re days away from the December 25^th release of the film adaption of the Chris Kyle’s American Sniper; a deceased White killer is memorialized for being “the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.” It is maximum White hypocrisy to dismiss black counter-violence as a moment of lunacy. Brinsley may have been inspired by and continuing Kyle’s and Brown’s sanctified legacies of righteous bloodshed.

#RenishaMcBride: #YesAllWomen?

After [her] boys disappeared, Mrs Glenda Moore knocked on a nearby door for help but was told: 'I don't know you. I'm not going to help you.’ Mrs Moore then tried another neighbor near her Staten Island home, but when she rang the bell they turned off the lights and refused to answer. Her cousin Nancy Jean, 41, fought back tears as she described the ordeal. 'I can’t believe the way she was treated by the [Whites] she went to for help.

Mrs. Glenda Moore wasn't drunk. She wasn't high. She isn't a prostitute. She's a married black mother of two boys who were allowed to drown during the 2012 ravages of Hurricane Sandy. Her White neighbors rejected her maternal pleas, branded her a potential looter, thug.

I'm sure Renisha McBride's family and friends wish she had received the same deaf ear; it seems likely that if Theodore Wafer had ignored her, she might still be alive. But his White manhood could not tolerate withdrawal from confrontation.

The summer of 2014 has seen a chorus of chatter on the problem of black masculinity. Ray Rice displaced O.J. Simpson as the embodiment of domestic abuse. White females were the vanguard in the effort to neuter and suspend Stephen A. Smith for suggesting that Rice and other male abusers might be provoked to violence. Former News 12 New Jersey reporter Sean Bergin proclaimed that the infinite pathologies plaguing black people are the result of shiftless black fathers. There have even been a sizable number of reports chastising black males' negligible interest in the murder trial of Renisha McBride in comparison to the historic and ongoing allure of Trayvon Martin.

Black males have much room for improvement. Domestic abuse is indefensible. But most black males' - non-white males and females globally - current concept of what a man is, what a man does, is based on our understanding and experience with the likes of Theodore Wafer, The Man.

I then examined certain other specific patterns of language used by Black males within the white supremacy culture. To begin with, Black males in particular, but also black females, refer to the white male as "The Man." Once this term "The Man" is thought or uttered, the brain computes that... the white male is "The Man," meaning logically "The only Man"... (Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, The Isis Papers pg. 120)

White Jesus, John Wayne, Justin Timberlake, Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston, Superman, Elvis Presley or Theodore Wafer. Biblical or fictitious, gun-toting or hip-shaking, these White prototypes of manhood fortify White Supremacy and have contaminated the thoughts and behaviors of millions of black males.

Wafer also admits he was mad when he grabbed his shotgun that was in a closet, saying he didn't want to "cower" in his home and wasn't going to be a victim.

President Barack Obama has been chided for nearly two full terms for shrinking from conflict, not being aggressive, man enough for the White House. He wasn't sufficiently angry in responding to the 2010 BP oil spill. He demonstrated "incompetence" and "ineptitude" as he slunk away from the hostilities in Syria. Sen. John McCain and a host of others have denounced him as a weakling for his handling of the conflict in Gaza, President Vladimir Putin and the non-white children leap-frogging the southern border.

The criticisms suggest that many Whites would prefer if the commander and chief were more like Dearborn Heights' own, Theodore Wafer. Our leader should look forward to the of sting battle. Wafer didn't waste time to locate his phone to solicit assistance, and he refused to be intimidated on his own property. He flexed his second amendment right to carry a big stick and invited Renisha McBride to make his day. McBride provoked him, "crossed the line" by descending unidentified upon his residence; his White manhood demanded maximum, lethal retaliation.

During cross examination, assistant prosecutor Athina Siringas said Wafer never told officers he was scared until they asked. "I had a lot of emotions, fear, panicking," Wafer said. "I guess in front of a cop I didn't want to come across as less of a man."

Wafer has just ended the life of an unarmed nineteen-year-old female. Blasted bits of her head across his lawn. Yet his focus is on projecting the appropriate image of unflinching White masculinity.

Wafer's tear ducts worked overtime during his first day on the witness stand, but minutes after wiping McBride off the earth, he shed no tears. He informed officers that he was full of "piss and vinegar" and wanted to brandish his firearm to whom ever happened to be knocking at his door.

This is ethos of White masculinity. Wafer, Anthony Cumia, and Chicago's David Nicosia are contemporary manifestations of this barbaric tradition.

Nicosia told Judge Arnette Hubbard he wanted her to stop smoking outside a Chicago courthouse. The attorney says Nicosia called the 79-year-old judge “Rosa Parks” and spat in her face. A county sheriff’s spokeswoman said 55-year-old Nicosia walked away but Hubbard followed and confronted him. She said Nicosia spit on Hubbard again before slapping the judge’s face.

White men are not to retreat or endure the impudence of a black female at any time - especially not at the ungodly hour of four in the morning. Any amount of physical force is justified - perhaps mandatory - to remind an uncouth or sassy negress like McBride or Dr. Ersula Ore that they are to always remember their place and never challenge the patriarch of White Supremacy.

But we could not have a global System of White Terrorism without the White matriarch.

All this got me thinking about privilege-denying, white supremacist-backing white women, and the tyranny they can cause when they don't get their way. These women like to have it both ways: sit upon their pedestal and look down with resentment upon people of color and, when it suits them, jump off their pedestal and claim that if we dismantle sexism, other forms of oppression will crumble. These same women will decry the persistence of sexism/misogyny, but deny they are complicit in white [supremacy] that oppresses people of color on a totally different level... 

White Women have demonstrated immense power over the last year. They rallied around Texas State Senator Wendy Davis and have her poised to challenge for governorship. They were integral in weaving the false narrative about Isla Vista suspected murderer Elliot Rodger; the #YesAllWomen campaign reduced him to a vessel of misogyny and undiluted evil. They used the firing of former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson to insist that their oppression is on par with Harriet Jacobs and other oppressed non-whites.

White women were a critical component in the Trayvon Martin murder trial, and they are equally pivotal in the McBride murder case; the judge, and defense attorney are both White females in McBride's trial - two of the jurors are as well.

Where were these pale allies when Rachel Jeantel was being lampooned and blamed during the court case of 2013? Where were our melanin deficient sisters when First Lady Michele Obama was being heckled by a White female member of Code Pink? Where have they been for the duration of the Renisha McBride proceedings? Does #YesAllWomen include melanin dominant females?

"The sound in the front was louder than the sound on the side and there was something slapping the window," he said. "The floor was vibrating from the banging on the doors."

An overworked White Supremacist trope is that black people are superhuman creatures, capable of extraordinary feats of physical force. Black females are habitually lauded for being reservoirs of strength, incapable of submission. Consequently, they're most often denied the delicacy and fragility that White females elicit reflexively. According to Mr. Wafer, McBride was fixin' to huff and puff and blow his house away. Of course he had no recourse; he had to defend his property and life and annihilating a black female it was an indispensable part of that process.

Prosecutors then played a video of Wafer being questioned by an investigator at the police department, where he sips on something they've given him to drink and does not appear to be emotional. Police told him the person he shot and killed was young. And, at times, Wafer refers to the person he shot as "IT."

It. Ain't I a human? Absolutely not. One would think our White sisters in arms would be equally appalled by this commentary and attacking Wafer with the same conviction and venom they aimed at Stephen A. Smith. White feminists have been mum on McBride. A teenage black female talked about as an inanimate object. A thing. "It." A hefty number of Whites would not permit a fetus to be described in such terms.

Numerous witnesses have testified over the course of the trial that a mere $56 dollars had been recovered from Renisha’s body. On the audio recording, however, police officers can be heard noting that a $100 bill had been found on her person, leading to one officer responding “No kidding?” This in turn led to a discussion on the officers’ part as to whether McBride had been working as a prostitute and had been seeking to collect money owed.

Michelle Beadle where are you? Sandra Fluke where are you? Calling any and all White feminists. Just because a black female has a Franklin in her pocket, she's a whore? President Obama proudly penned the Lilly Ledbetter Act in 2009. Why not pay it forward in supporting an unarmed, black, teenage female gunned down and suspected of being a hooker? #YesAllWomen declared that this sexist world cultivates exploitation and violence against woman with token punishments if any. Why hasn't McBride's murder and subsequent verbal demeaning produced indignant White feminist comrades?

Where has justice gone when we can’t protect ourselves or our property? What message is our “justice” system sending? The jurors just gave permission to [Breaking and Entering] to every thug out there. So sad.

This is Racist Suspect Michelle Roose Walter's response to Theodore Wafer being found guilty of second degree murder for McBride's death. Walter sounds like a kindred spirit of Charlton Heston, former NRA President and star of Planet of The Apes. In the Context of White Supremacy, termination of black life is always supposed to be a rational, just and non-punishable act. White life, White property and White rule are infinitely, eternally superior to a billion Renisha McBrides or Glenda Moores.

Syreeta McFadden remarked, "Only in America can a dead black [teen] go on trial for his [or her] own murder." Under the System of White Supremacy, the injustice is that Trayvon Martin and McBride can't be exhumed and convicted for being black and likely thugs.

Jackie Robinson On "Progress"

Hall of Fame NFL tight end Kellen Winslow wrote about discovering that his lofty gridiron accomplishments scored nothing with Racist. He's just another nigger. Earlier this month Hall of Fame baseball luminary Hank Aaron disclosed that much of the opposition to President Obama is because of Racism. White angst erupted. Super Bowl champion, Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman has brilliantly dissected the White Supremacist, antiblack logic behind the attacks on himself and the release of DeSean Jackson from the Philadelphia Eagles. Many Whites rapidly promote the rhetoric of "progress." The fact that Sherman and Jackson are able to make millions while being loud-mouthed braggarts and staying cool with their hoodlum homeboys evidences just how far we've come from the days of Jackie Robinson. Heck. Kobe Bryant can be accused of raping a White woman, is never convicted, gets a $48.5 million dollar contract while playing in 6 of 82 games of the season, and makes time to scoff at the notion of defending the likes of Trayvon Martin just because he's black. Surely this is the era of black liberation.

Jackie Robinson's name is frequently invoked in slanderous juxtaposition when any number of Whites vilify the likes of Bryant or Marcus Smart. It's a coded way of saying: Nigger, we've done so much worse to you people; shut up and be happy with all we now give and permit you to do. On this day Whites have designated as a time to honor the White Terrorism Jackie Robinson endured - the same Racist purgatory that likely resulted in his death at age 53, we should reflect on Robinson's own thoughts on White Supremacy and the fairy tale of "progress."

I thought I had learned the worst there was to learn about racial hatred in America. The year 1949 taught me more. A black man, even after he has proven himself on and off the playing field, will still be denied his rights. I am not talking about the things that happened to me in order to portray myself as some kind of martyr. I am recording them because I want to warn the white world that young blacks today are not willing—nor should they be—to endure the humiliations I did. I suffered them because I hoped to provide a better future for my children and for young black people everywhere, and because I naïvely believed that my sacrifices might help a little to make America the kind of country it was supposed to be. People have asked me, “Jack, what’s your beef? You’ve got it made.” I’m grateful for all the breaks and honors and opportunities I’ve had, but I always believe I won’t have it made until the humblest black kid in the most remote backwoods of America has it made.
It is not terribly difficult for the black man as an individual to enter into the white man’s world and be partially accepted. However, if that individual black man is, in the eyes of the white world, an “uppity nigger,” he is in for a very hard time indeed. I can just hear my liberal white friends and a lot of Negroes who haven’t yet got the word that they are black, protesting such an observation.
The late Malcolm X had a very interesting comment on the “progress” of the Negro. I disagreed with Malcolm vigorously in many areas during his earlier days, but I certainly agreed with him when he said, “Don’t tell me about progress the black man has made. You don’t stick a knife ten inches in my back, pull it out three or four, then tell me I’m making progress.”
Malcolm, in a few well-chosen words, captured the essence of the way most blacks, I believe, think today. Virtually every time the black stands up like a man to make a protest or tell a truth as he sees it, white folks and some white-minded black folks try to hush or shame him by singing out that “You’ve come a long way” routine. They fail to say that we’ve still got a long way to go because of the unjust headstart the founding fathers of this country had on us and the handicaps they bestowed on“the red men they robbed and the blacks they abducted and enslaved.
Whites are expert game-players in their contests to maintain absolute power. One of their time-honored gimmicks is to point to individual blacks who have achieved recognition: “But look at Ralph Bunche. Think about Lena Horne or Marian Anderson. Look at Jackie Robinson. They made it.”
As one of those who has “made it,” I would like to be thought of as an inspiration to our young. But I don’t want them lied to. The late Dr. Ralph Bunche, a true black man of our time, felt the same way. The “system supporters” will point to the honors heaped on a Ralph Bunche. They will play down the fact that he and his son were barred from membership in the New York Tennis Club because of blackness. They will gloss over the historical truth that Mr. Bunche was once offered a high post in the State Department and did not accept because it would have meant Jim Crow schools for his children. Look at Lena Horne, they say. The show business world took this lovely woman and tried to make her into a sepia Marilyn Monroe.” “They overlooked her dramatic ability and her other talents and insisted that she be cast only in the role of a cheap sexpot. When she refused they white-listed her out of the film colony. They point to her as a success symbol, but they will go easy on reminding you that she defied the United States Army when she was programmed to sing Jim Crow concerts for black troops and separate concerts for whites and German prisoners of war in a Southern installation. Lena sang for the black troops only.
If a black becomes too important or too big for his racial britches or if he has too much power, he will get cut down. They will cut him down even when the power the black has doesn’t come from the white man, but from grass-roots black masses, as was the case of Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. With all his faults, Adam was a man who rocked the establishment boat, and the establishment lynched him politically for it. I don’t think anyone in or out of sports could ever seriously accuse Willie Mays of offending white sensitivities. But when he was in California, whites refused to sell him a house in their community. They loved his talent, but they didn’t want him for a neighbor.
Name them for me. The examples of blacks who “made it.” For virtually every one you name, I can give you a sordid piece of factual information on how they have been mistreated, humiliated.
Not being able to fight back is a form of severe punishment.
